Per <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nj.com\/politics\/index.ssf\/2017\/11\/cracks_emerge_in_democratic_party_before_murphy_ta.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NJ.com<\/a>, \u201c<i>Sweeney and Coughlin also know Murphy needs them to pass his initiatives<\/i>.\u201d Thus it seems that while Murphy has a Democratically controlled legislature to work with he does not have <i>Cart Blanche<\/i> as he had initially thought.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Again per NJ.com, \u201c<i>The millionaire&#8217;s tax and legal pot are part of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nj.com\/politics\/index.ssf\/2017\/10\/nj_governor_tax_plans_add_up.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">his\u00a0plan to increase funding<\/a>\u00a0for education, transportation and public-worker pensions. Murphy\u00a0also wants to raise money by\u00a0closing\u00a0corporate tax loopholes.<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 18pt;\"><i>Sweeney has been <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nj.com\/politics\/index.ssf\/2015\/05\/sweeney_once_again_pushes_nj_millionaires_tax_to_b.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a consistent supporter<\/a>\u00a0of a millionaire&#8217;s tax under Gov.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nj.com\/chris-christie\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chris Christie<\/a>&#8216;s administration. But he argues <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nj.com\/politics\/index.ssf\/2017\/11\/murphy_asks_local_nj_leaders_help_us_fight_trump_t.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">lawmakers should wait to see<\/a>\u00a0what happens\u00a0with the federal tax plan being pushed by President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/administration\/president-trump\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Donald Trump<\/a>\u00a0and his fellow Republicans who lead Congress.\u00a0<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 18pt;\"><i>The U.S. Senate proposal\u00a0would wreak havoc among New Jerseyans because\u00a0it would eliminate\u00a0state and local tax deductions, Sweeney argues. The House version\u00a0would eliminate the break for all but $10,000 in property taxes.\u201d<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 18pt;\">If the President gets his way Murphy still thinks that he can impose a millionaire&#8217;s tax, the problem with this is that there is nothing to prevent the so called millionaires from leaving New Jersey. And Murphy&#8217;s timing better be very good or otherwise he could find himself standing all alone in supporting a raising of any taxes while the Federal government is trying to lower them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 18pt;\">\u201c<i>Sweeney told NJ Advance Media on Tuesday that he has &#8220;the greatest respect&#8221; for Murphy and that he&#8217;s still &#8220;in favor&#8221; of a millionaire&#8217;s tax.<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 18pt;\"><i>&#8220;But my concerns are legitimate,&#8221; Sweeney\u00a0added. &#8220;I just want to wait and see what happens in Washington.&#8221;<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 18pt;\"><i>&#8220;This is not pumping brakes to screw him up,&#8221; he\u00a0said of Murphy. &#8220;We need to know what the impact is going to be.&#8221;<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 18pt;\"><i>Sweeney said his concern is &#8220;exodus of wealth&#8221; &#8212; that if Republicans in Congress take away key deductions that New Jersey taxpayers use and then Democrats in the state raise taxes on the rise, millionaires might leave the state in droves Coughlin\u00a0echoed Sweeney in an interview with\u00a0NJ Advance Media on Tuesday. He said lawmakers need to &#8220;see what comes out of Washington&#8221; first to &#8220;determine the best course of action&#8221; on the millionaire&#8217;s tax.<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 18pt;\"><i>&#8220;I see it as a potential source of revenue that I think we should absolutely look at,&#8221; Coughlin aid. &#8220;But what happens there may matter here. When we know what happens, we&#8217;ll understand the best\u00a0path for New Jersey.&#8221;<\/i>\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 18pt;\">So it seems to me that with a less than forty-five percent turnout in the gubernatorial election and impeding federal tax reform throws a pall over Murphy&#8217;s tax plans.
