Right now all we do is check the emissions. Nothing else is looked at, you could have bald tires and they couldn\u2019t do anything about it.<\/h4>\n

Should the State of NJ go back to a more thorough vehicle inspection system? If you ask Governor Christie the answer is no<\/a>. Well if you look around while driving you will see many cars that have brake lights that are out, turn signals that do not work, headlights that do not work or so misaligned that they either blind you or point in every direction instead of where they should, broken windshields, wornout tires, etc.<\/h4>\n

Why do we not go back to a much more complete inspection you may ask? Well for one thing it costs more. The inspection process has been privatized after all. And the more they have to do, the more money they get paid. But, then the question is would it be worth it to at least do a visual inspection of the lights and tires?<\/h4>\n

My answer is a resounding YES! How much extra could it cost and it should not add that much extra time to the inspection process. After all how many of you have seen cars that have no working third brake light or no brake lights at all. This is very dangerous and is very easy to spot when a vehicle comes in for inspection. We can not expect the police to go out and look for burnt out brake lights. They have better things to do than that.<\/h4>\n

While the science of statistics says that there have not been more accidents due to not having an inspection system that does no more than just check a vehicle\u2019s emissions, how do we know that the statistics are correct? Common sense rears up its head and says are you crazy or what! There are so many vehicles on New Jersey\u2019s roadways with things the old inspection process would have caught.<\/h4>\n

How many times does the driving public have to suffer with these vehicles that would not have passed the old inspection system? What other problems lurk below the surface with these vehicles? Are they safe to drive or are they dangerous to drive is the question that only can be answered by inspection.<\/h4>\n

Also, you only have to drive the highways and byways of this state to see for yourself how many vehicles have expired inspection stickers or have not passed the emissions only inspection. And when you look even more closely at many of them they also have lights that are not working or something else wrong like tinted covers over the headlights or license plates. The police can not be everywhere and they can not ignore their primary function, that being keeping the public safe.<\/h4>\n

So, I say with all due respect – Governor Christie you are wrong! The question is how much should the inspection system be expanded without causing the motoring public too much of an inconvenience.<\/h4>\n
