{"id":3377,"date":"2019-08-15T15:35:22","date_gmt":"2019-08-15T19:35:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.musingsbymichael.com\/blog\/?p=3377"},"modified":"2019-08-15T15:35:22","modified_gmt":"2019-08-15T19:35:22","slug":"hemp","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.musingsbymichael.com\/blog\/2019\/08\/15\/hemp\/","title":{"rendered":"Hemp"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.musingsbymichael.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Hemp-rope.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3380\" src=\"http:\/\/www.musingsbymichael.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Hemp-rope.jpg\" alt=\"Hemp rope\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.musingsbymichael.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Hemp-rope.jpg 640w, http:\/\/www.musingsbymichael.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Hemp-rope-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Well you still can not buy or smoke recreational marijuana, farmers will be able to grow hemp here in New Jersey under a law signed by Governor Murphy on August 9<sup>th<\/sup>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Per <a href=\"https:\/\/patch.com\/new-jersey\/pointpleasant\/nj-gov-phil-murphy-signs-24-bills-law-repeals-tax\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Patch<\/a>.com, \u201c<i>A5322 &#8211; Establishes program for cultivation, handling, processing, transport, and sale of hemp.<\/i>\u201d And from the bill itself, \u201c<i>The Legislature finds and declares that hemp is a viable agricultural crop and a potentially valuable agricultural commodity in the State, and that hemp should be cultivated, handled, processed, transported, and sold in the State to the maximum extent permitted by federal law.\u00a0 It is the purpose to: promote the cultivation and processing of hemp; develop new commercial markets for farmers and businesses through the sale of hemp products; promote the expansion of the State\u2019s hemp industry to the maximum extent permitted by federal law; allow farmers and businesses to cultivate, handle, and process hemp, and to sell hemp products for commercial purposes; and to move the State and its citizens to the forefront of the hemp industry.<\/i>\u201d<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 18pt;\">So the first time in a very long time, hemp rope will again be made in the United States from hemp grown in New Jersey. President Trump made the growing of hemp legal back in December 2018, it was illegal to grow hemp since 1937. Per <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2018\/11\/30\/18119536\/hemp-cannabis-farm-bill-politics-regulation-marijuana-industry-business\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Verge<\/a>, hemp has \u201c <i>been effectively banned in the US since the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Marihuana_Tax_Act_of_1937\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Marijuana Tax Act of 1937<\/a>.<\/i>\u201d Also \u201c<i>Justin Strekal, political director of the pro-marijuana group NORML praised the agreement but said new regulations are needed. \u201cFor years, many of the producers of these products have navigated in a grey area of the law \u2014 manufacturing products of variable and sometimes questionable quality and safety.\u201d<\/i>\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 18pt;\">So common sense has finally come about and hemp will be grown in New Jersey. Too many people in power have lumped hemp in with marijuana in the past. I for one really think that this will help the farmer&#8217;s of New Jersey and of the United States. No longer will we have to buy a foreign grown and made product, which should lower the cost of rope.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 18pt;\">It made no sense from the beginning of the ban to associate hemp grown for making rope with marijuana the controlled substance.
