No other state has had created one in about hundred years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 18pt;\">From <a href=\"https:\/\/www.northjersey.com\/story\/news\/new-jersey\/2019\/11\/13\/phil-murphy-starts-create-state-bank-nj-questions-staff\/2580751001\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">NorthJersey.com<\/a>, \u201c<i>Gov. Phil Murphy on Wednesday took the first step toward\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.northjersey.com\/story\/news\/new-jersey\/2017\/04\/18\/murphy-pitches-state-bank-skeptical-crowd-bankers\/100609584\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">creating a state-run bank<\/a>, and he\u2019s tapped a member of his administration touched by financial scandal to help develop the details.<\/i><!--more--><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 18pt;\"><i>The 14-member \u201cimplementation board\u201d Murphy empaneled to research how a public bank would work will include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.northjersey.com\/story\/news\/watchdog\/2018\/10\/15\/phil-murphy-campaign-derrick-green-investigation-jetgate-bermuda-bank-accounts\/1643801002\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Derrick Green<\/a>, whose work on a campaign in Bermuda several years ago drew attention early in Murphy\u2019s tenure to the governor\u2019s hiring practices.<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 18pt;\"><i>Green\u2019s hiring as a senior adviser in Murphy\u2019s administration raised concerns with some lawmakers last year but his connection to the scandal known as \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.northjersey.com\/story\/news\/watchdog\/2018\/10\/15\/phil-murphy-campaign-derrick-green-investigation-jetgate-bermuda-bank-accounts\/1643801002\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jetgate<\/a>\u201d<\/i>\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 18pt;\">Furthermore, \u201c<i>Lt. Gov. Sheila Oliver, who will also sit on the board, said one of the benefits of a state bank would be to provide access to capital for people who have been traditionally blocked from it.<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 18pt;\">\u201c<i>A public bank is about power to the people,\u201d she said.<\/i>\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 18pt;\">All I see is more opportunities for corruption and the misuse of public funds. I wrote about the idea of a State Bank in a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.musingsbymichael.com\/blog\/2017\/12\/14\/is-the-grinch-coming\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">blog<\/a> just after Murphy was elected and I still agree with my conclusions I made at that time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 18pt;\">There is no way that this will truly benefit the the taxpayers of New Jersey, much less those who would chiefly benefit from its creation. I have even less faith in this idea because of Murphy appointing Mr. Green as the senior adviser. As the Governor is now trying to move ahead, I foresee many obstacles in the way. Both economic and political, for Murphy and the legislature are not exactly on the same page anymore.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 18pt;\">From <a href=\"https:\/\/www.njspotlight.com\/2019\/10\/governor-hasnt-given-up-on-plan-for-a-public-bank-in-new-jersey\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">NJ Spotlight<\/a>, \u201c<i>The basic premise of a public bank is to leverage the millions of dollars in taxpayer deposits that are typically held in large commercial banks to ensure those funds are used to serve some sort of public-policy mission. Advocates of public banks also say they can provide borrowers with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.njspotlight.com\/2015\/08\/15-08-02-public-bank-touted-as-way-to-raise-funds-without-burdening-nj-taxpayers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">fairer interest rates<\/a> and other favorable lending terms because there\u2019s no need to charge high fees to fund things like large executive bonuses or to pump up shareholder profits.<\/i>\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 18pt;\">What I see is a political patronage pit that only will serve those who have the political pull to get loans from a state taxpayer backed bank.
