\"Spanish<\/a><\/p>\n

History repeating itself is today’s topic.<\/span><\/p>\n

I don’t know if you have or have not heard about the Spanish Flu Pandemic of 1918, but it was the deadliest pandemic the world has ever known. The Coronavirus (Covid-19) death toll (just Google coronavirus deaths worldwide) for the whole planet as of today is 655,000. Deaths<\/a> from the Spanish Flu were 50 million, so today’s pandemic is nowhere as bad.<\/span><\/p>\n

At the time of the Spanish Flu<\/a>, \u201cWith no vaccine to protect against influenza infection and no antibiotics to treat secondary bacterial infections that can be associated with influenza infections, control efforts worldwide were limited to non-pharmaceutical interventions\u00a0such as isolation, quarantine, good personal hygiene, use of disinfectants, and limitations of public gatherings, which were applied unevenly.<\/i>\u201d Sound familiar? While we have antibiotics which they did not have in 1918, there are parallels. Such as the use of face masks, proper cleaning of surfaces, limiting public gatherings and so on. And yet life went on and the people survived.<\/span><\/p>\n

There were two waves of the Spanish Flu. It came in the Spring and returned with a vengeance in the Fall. Obviously it had mutated and become even more deadly in a very short time. The Coronavirus has mutated multiple times already. From Healthline<\/a>, \u201cA new study<\/a> from the Scripps Research Institute in Florida suggests the new coronavirus has mutated into a variant that\u2019s more infectious. <\/i><\/span><\/p>\n

The mutation \u2014 named \u201cthe D614G mutation\u201d \u2014 occurred on the spike protein, the part of the virus that helps it bind and fuse to our cells. The D614G mutation makes it easier for the virus to infect our cells.<\/i>\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

So I hope you now can see the historical parallels between the two pandemics. We humans need to learn the lessons of the past (history) or we will be forever doomed to repeat the same mistakes over and over.<\/span><\/p>\n
