What’s so great about New Jersey?

Great Train Robbery

Today I want to put write an upbeat blog about our great state of New Jersey. So this will be about what’s so great about New Jersey. Wait, why would I want to do that you might be thinking? Well it seems that all I have been doing has been making negative remarks about New Jersey and now to the positive side.

One of the first great things about New Jersey is how we are geographically situated. Sitting between the two great cities of the Northeastern United States- New York and Philadelphia makes this state unique.

Next many famous people were born right here, such as Abbott and Costello, the comedy team. And Alan Alda the actor who played Hawkeye in MASH. Or how about Jason Alexander who played George on Seinfeld or Robert Blake who played Baretta or Tom Cruise the movie actor or how about Danny DeVito to just to name a few of a very long list of actors.  Then of course there is Yogi Bera the famous baseball player and manager with the unique sayings, or Wally Dallenbach, Sr. a famous Indy car driver or Marvin Hagler the Middle Weight boxing Champion or William “Count” Basie the great band leader of the 20th century, or Jon Bon Jovi of rock and roll fame, or Paul Simon of Simon & Garfunkel and last but of course not least Bruce Springsteen “The Boss.” I could go on all day, but I think you get the idea.

Now how about all the things that were invented here in New Jersey, such as the Electric Light, Phonograph and Moving Pictures all by Thomas A. Edison or the Band-Aid dreamed up by the brothers Johnson now know as Johnson and Johnson or Bar Code and its Reader both invented here and something that we see in use everyday. Or how about the Transistor which was developed by Bell Telephone scientists or the use of Chlorine in treating water, yes that was invented here! Again I could go on for days listing the things invented here.

And to add something more to what is so great about this state I will now talk about the things that have happened here. Such as the following, the destruction of the dirigible Hindenburg at Lakehurst or the kidnapping of the Lindbergh baby and trial of the kidnapper – Richard Hauptmann, or the fact that the first baseball game happened in Hoboken or the first football game between the colleges of Rutgers and Princeton. Again the list goes on and on, such as the first movie was made here and the first outdoor movie theater was here in Cherry Hill.

My guess is that you might have known about some of what I have mentioned, but many of them you never heard of before.

So the next time someone from outside of New Jersey puts this state down you can point at this blog and say New Jersey is great because of our contribution to society from people to inventions to historic events that changed the world.

That is my opinion- Jumpin Jersey Mike
