Some really dumb ideas have come out of the mouths of our New Jersey politicians and that is exactly what I am going to write about!
I will start with one idea that has been proposed before and is now actively being promoted as a solution to help Atlantic City. The only place that you can legally gamble is in Atlantic City New Jersey and yet our dumb politicians very much want to expand it to Northern New Jersey. And get this, others have piped in with the idea of extending the proposal to many other counties. Why is this such a dumb idea? If you can go gamble in three neighboring states, why would you need to construct more places in New Jersey? The simple answer is that it does not make any sense to build outside of Atlantic City. No one would go to these casinos and they would quickly fail. Polls have been taken and the citizens of New Jersey do not want to expand gambling! Yet the politicians do not seem to take in the fact that there is gambling in neighboring New York and Pennsylvania plus in nearby Connecticut.
Another dumb idea is the passage of a Millionaire’s tax. To balance this year’s state budget our wonderful naive legislators have again put forward a tax on people who make at least one million dollars. The State Senate President, Steve Sweeney, and the Assembly Speaker, Vincent Prieto, are pushing this idea into law. It is a way to fully fund the state employee’s pension system. My only response to this very dumb idea is the following- what prevents those who would have to pay this new tax from moving to any neighboring state or any other state? The answer is simple- nothing! So much for that dumb idea.
Now how about we create a law that can not be enforced because the technology that it calls for is not being used by any gun manufacturer. The law I am talking about was sponsored by Loretta Weinberg. It was triggered by a US Patent that now is lapsed because no one will make a gun using it. Why not, well for one thing it is problematic in the way it works and might result in the gun not firing. The law is a giant failure and was a waste of time. It just proves the theory that if you mandate something that does not exist, except in the lab, it will not just miraculously move from the lab to the being manufactured. Big dumb law!
How about a law that would “exclusively authorize” a level-1 trauma center to develop and maintain advanced life support services in the municipality in which it is located. This means that the only the three level-1 trauma centers, that exist at this time, would receive trauma patients. They are Cooper University Hospital in Camden, Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, and University Hospital in Newark. Well South Jersey Boss George Norcross has caused such a law to be proposed and the State of New Jersey budget even includes money for the conversion (transfer) process to take place for Cooper University Hospital. Boss Norcross has a vested interest in this hospital. Why is this a dumb law, well the current system works well and if it is not broken; why fix it?
If you just look for dumb laws in New Jersey, you will find them. The above are just a sample of how stupid are legislators are. And they must know that the voting public is complacent and dumb themselves. Otherwise they would not write such dumb laws.
