Political Machinations

Voting

Political machinations are again taking place here in New Jersey and across the nation as election time comes up next week. I have received campaign flyers that make bogus claims against the party they are running against. In this case they are saying that the candidates in office now are responsible for our taxes being raised and many other politically created problems. The facts are completely distorted and almost unrecognizable in the misrepresented material that they present as fact.

Now do not get me wrong, both of the major political parties are guilty of doing this from time to time. It is called “Mud Slinging” and it is a very dirty way of making your opponent look like he or she is a first class liar. This way of campaigning has become very prevalent in political circles and too often is taken as the truth. Only to be shown as a lie after the election is over.

It is about time that there is some way to prevent lies and innuendos from being used in campaigns. There should be some public pressure put upon the people who do this, no matter if it is a campaign, a union or some other party. I can not see any of our politicians writing a law that would demand truth in campaigning and penalize those who break such a law. Yes, I know by the Constitution of the United States that we have the right to free speech and such a law might come into conflict with that right.

But, we do have truth in advertising laws and I can not see any reason that we can not have a truth in campaigning law. Maybe I am being naive and should just ignore these false and sometimes scandalous accusations. Yet, it is not my nature to do so. So I do apologize to those who find my tirade a bit irritating and say to those who are irritated go read something else!

The need for such a law is very much needed and yet I know it will never see daylight in either of our legislative houses. No politician would dare to do such a thing as to cut their own political throat and we the people have no way to introduce such a law. It is a stalemate where we the people lose, as well as those honest politicians (and yes I know there are a few) also finds themselves targets of corrupt political animals who will stop at nothing to get or stay in office.

Why can not the voting public bring pressure upon these mud slinging politicians? We could and some do, yet it is like yelling into a hurricane where our voices are lost in the wind. Our news people no longer seem to be neutral and take sides to help the candidate(s) that they support. This is a pity and only those who take the time to find out the true facts can vote with the knowledge of the truth and with all the facts in their possession that lets them make an informed decision on who to vote for.

Just as a closure, for me at least, both political parties are responsible for the tax mess we are in this state. If one takes a good look at what has taken place it does seem to be exacerbated by the fact that the Democrats controlling our legislature for many years now keep talking about fixing this problem and yet do nothing at all to alleviate it. Somehow, I think that the Republicans who are now in office must also take some responsibility too; so no one party can fix this tax mess without the other party working with them. In conclusion all I can say is does anyone have an aspirin? My head hurts.

That is my opinion- Jumpin Jersey Mike
