The New Jersey rip-off took place in our Assembly last night! Our wonderful politicians have passed a bill that would raise our Gas Tax to $0.23 per gallon from the $0.14 we pay now and as being the nice guys and girls they are, sometime in the next eighteen months they will lower the Sales Tax by one percent. Is that not generous of them? Not!!!!!!!!!!!
The Governor says he would sign this bill if the Senate also passes it on Thursday. The Tax payers of this state have already spoken and said that by an overwhelming majority that we do not want a raise in the Gas Tax. But, if they dedicated the one percent of the Sales Tax to the Transportation Trust Fund instead of raising the Gas Tax the state could raise over one billion dollars a year. That is pretty darn good amount of money in my opinion.
The Wall Street Journal reported that ‘The Assembly’s bill calls for a gas tax increase to take effect Friday, the first day of the state’s new fiscal year. The 1% sales tax cut would be phased in over three years, with full implementation in January 2018. Mr. Prieto said all New Jersey residents would benefit from the legislation. “We are going to lower a tax that will affect nine million residents in the state of New Jersey,” he said. “Everyone who pays taxes pays sales taxes.”’
Earth to Prieto lowering the Sales Tax by one percent will not help the working poor at all! Say you buy something that costs $30.00; under the existing 7% tax it would cost a total of $32.10. If the tax were lowered to 6% it would cost you $31.80; this would give you a savings of a $0.30. But you have to also take into account that you would be paying an extra $0.23 per gallon of gas. So if you buy ten gallons of gas then you are paying $2.30 more in taxes! Some bad deal for the New Jersey tax payer.
How about it Mr. Sweeny, are you dumb enough to politically cut your throat by posting this abomination of a bill on Thursday in the Senate? Then you can forget about ever being Governor of this state and being remembered for your political stupidity. I call on all voters to call the Senate President’s office at either (856) 251-9801 (West Deptford) or
(856) 339-0808 (Salem). Or you can send him your message of displeasure via Twitter – @NJSenatePres or Facebook – https://www.facebook.com/senatorsweeney/ or via Email at SenSweeney@njleg.org. So you have no excuse as I have given you a plethora choices, so go do it!
Just say No to this bill or any other that would raise the Gas Tax!
One thing that everyone needs to realize is that here in New Jersey we do not get much money from the Federal Government in return for our tax dollars. How about stepping up Senators Menendez (email- www.menendez.senate.gov/contact) and Booker (email- www.booker.senate.gov/?p=contact) to get us the money we need to keep our roadways safe! Tell them that we are sick and tired of being short changed by the Feds.
And finally to Governor Christie who thinks that this bill is a good idea; why are you being so stupid to think that we the people of New Jersey think that this bill is in anyway fair or saves money for the working poor? Get real and wake up Governor!
That is my opinion- Jumpin Jersey Mike
PS Since this bill is coming up on Thursday I thought it best to publish today instead of waiting. Next week will be the next time for the National blog.
