Peace between the Koreas?

Korea Summit

Now that President Trump and Kim Jong-un have met will there be peace between the Koreas? And will North Korea destroy their nuclear weapons?

Per CBS News, the summit “resulted in an understanding that Pyongyang would work toward denuclearization and the U.S. would end joint military exercises with South Korea. Mr. Trump and Kim signed a document agreeing to a handful of key provisions.

So it does sound like North Korea will get rid of it’s nuclear weapons and hopefully the intercontinental missiles too. But it could go like the ‘Munich Agreement‘ did with the result in peace for the short term and the end result of war in the long view.

You most likely do not see the parallels that I do, so I will elaborate. The first obvious one is that a dictator is involved, the second is that if an agreement does get signed (in this case North Korea will have security from attack) peace will happen between the two Korea’s and United States and allies will also be able step down their patrolling of the region plus of course NATO will not have to have forces nearby to intercede in the event of a North Korean attack.

Thefour key points of agreement between the two sides. The most important one, says CBS News correspondent Ben Tracy, appears to be a commitment by the North “to work toward complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.”

The other three points are equally vague; vows by both nations to, “establish new U.S.-DPRK (North Korea) relations in accordance with the desire of the peoples of the two countries for peace and prosperity,” to “join their efforts to build a lasting and stable peace regime on the Korean Peninsula” and to bring home to the U.S. the remains of American troops killed during the hostilities of the Korean War.

These points sound good, but until they are fleshed out a lot more this document is just a bunch of words that hold more hope than any true agreement that can be both be verifiable and enforceable. When everything is worked out, then I would feel that President Trump has truly accomplished something of any great significance.

It is my hope that something great comes out of this summit and it does not result in nothing concrete happening. If President Trump can accomplish these four key points, then he will truly go down in history as the person who brought peace to both North and South Korea and the region in general.

That is my opinion- Jumpin Jersey Mike
