Our June Primary is Irrelevant!

Donald Trump-Clinton

As of yesterday our June primary is irrelevant. On Tuesday Donald Trump won the Illinois presidential primary and Ted Cruz ended his campaign. The next day John Kasich also ended his campaign and Bernie Sanders has admitted that he can not win the Democratic nomination. The candidates for President will be Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump; barring of course any unforeseen circumstances. Thus making our primary more than useless and depriving New Jersey’s citizens from having any real influence in the nomination process.

There is no real practical reason for having our primary so late, which in turn makes New Jersey more irrelevant each time a new candidate for President of the United States is running for nomination. I know that there have been objections to move the primary to January because of the possibility of inclement weather, but how about late March or early April?

It just seems to me that we are being denied the political influence due us by have our primary so late in the primary season. After all any reason that can be reasonably argued against moving the primary to an earlier date seems to be mostly weather related. Yet other states that have worse weather than we do have their primaries in the wintertime, so there seems to be no logical reason that we should not move our primary to a much more influential date.

Of course our legislators are the ones who will have to propose a bill that moves the primary date and the Governor will have to sign it. But I do not really see much of a problem once the people put enough pressure to bear on the legislature to make them move the primary date. It just seems to be that our legislators just skirt the real issues in this state and this is one of them; yes I know that it is way down the all too long list of things that need to be addressed. But let us get real and at least get them to stop making us politically irrelevant during the Presidential primary season. Don’t you want to help select who the nominees will be? If the answer is yes, then send your members of the legislature an email or better yet call them and ask them to move the primary to either early April or late March.

That is my opinion- Jumpin Jersey Mike
