Is the United Nations relevant today? With the latest news that Saudi Arabia has been elected to the Women’s Rights Commission, this is another slap in the face for the people of the United States as the Saudis do not let their female population have any real rights at all. Even a right winger accepts that women do and should have rights, although they believe that aborting a baby is beyond a women’s right to choose to do so. And the left wingers who also believe that women have rights and also say they are equal in everyway to a man. So this question is why should we be part of the United Nations any more?
Hillel Neuer, executive director of UN Watch said, “Today the UN sent a message that women’s rights can be sold out for petro-dollars and politics and it let down millions of female victims worldwide who look to the world body for protection.” Mr. Neuer has put his thumb on one of the greatest weaknesses of the United Nations, the swaying of opinion by the influence of having the power to control vast amounts of money. Saudi Arabia and the rest of the members of OPEC have for years used their vast oil output to control the United Nations and prevent it from functioning as it should.
OPEC’s undue influence and the poorly thought out veto system has crippled the United Nations ability to prevent war, manage the peace and keep this world safe for all the people on this planet. It is a gross failure looking for an excuse to continue to exist!
Its predecessor the League of Nations was a powerless shell when World War II broke out and could not do anything to influence the belligerent parties to cease hostilities. The United Nations is in the same powerless position coupled with the fact that it is has been corrupted by OPEC and others to bend to their will. Without a massive reform of how the United Nations functions and how it does/could enforce its edicts without the cooperation of its member nations shows that it can not survive much longer the way it is.
Now is the time to say to the world that the United Nations needs a massive overhaul of its internal policies plus a much more reasonable method to prevent the swaying of policy due to influence of a minority of members to their point of view which then perverts the true mission of this organization.
All of this is very easy to say and terribly difficult to do. Hopefully some resolution of the massive undue influence and corruption can be found in time to prevent the United Nations from becoming irrelevant!
