Going paperless is the byword of many companies, including those that consumers have to interaction with.
The big questions you should be the following two. The first being is this going to save me money without causing any problems for myself and the second is will I be aware of the fact that I have to look at my email account for notifications, etc..
Now you might be wondering why you should get rid of paper. Well would you if it saves you money and you are alert enough to remember to check your email regularly? If you do want to save money and do not need the paper mail reminders then I would do it.
I was talking to my insurance agent while they were doing a policy review and he mentioned going paperless. Then he went on to say that I could save money, of which I was not aware. Well the amount of savings was significant and it was easy to do so I am now paperless, at least as far as my insurance is concerned.
For quite awhile I have been switching from using the mail to pay bills to paying them online. It saved me the trouble of going to the post office and the cost of postage. It does add-up. If you pay three bills per month via mail it is right now costing you $0.50 for a stamp and if you have to go to the post office to mail it you have the vehicle running costs in addition also. So you could end up saving a little money a year. But the real savings are in the time and convenience, not a real savings in money.
But the real savings are when companies take a percentage off the bill if you go paperless with them. So if I were you I would call and find out what those savings are, they could add up to a significant amount at the end of the year.
Something that should not be taken into account is the fact that having no paper bills and policies will not end the fact that you have to have them stored somewhere, either in your computer or in the cloud. Remember that it has to be stored safely, so no one but you can access your information.
One thing that might also be an incentive is the fact that you will not have all that paper to file away in a file cabinet, but do not be so ready to pat yourself on the back. Because in some cases you will have to print out a hard copy of some of your documents/bills at one time or another.
The thing that made me accept going paperless with my insurance company was the fact that it saved me money. This might be the argument that for you too, but remember there always advantages and disadvantages. It all depends on you.
That is my opinion- Jumpin Jersey Mike
