Today is Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving Sale

Today is Thanksgiving a time to give thanks for the many blessings that are bestowed upon us. And yet this holiday like all the others has been commercialized so that the merchants we buy from will make a profit.

Have you noticed that each year the sale displays and merchandise are being put out earlier and earlier. Halloween candy is out in September, Thanksgiving sales are in October, etc. All of this in the name of profit at any cost, the o mighty god of greed that too many in the business world worship.

Today when families should be getting together and sit down to a nice meal together, many are waiting outside stores to get items that will be on sale. It is Black Friday for some stores today even and their poor employees are forced to work instead of being with their family and friends.

It is time for all of us to reflect on what the true meaning of what our holidays really represent. Do they have ring true of the meaning that makes us proud to celebrate their them or have they been tarnished by the commercialization by those who worship at the alter of profit.

Maybe what is happening should continue and we will lose all the meaning of what are holidays are truly about. Or is it time to go to our elected representative(s) and say enough! We want the commercialization to stop and not allow our holidays to fade away to a meaningless gesture.

Tomorrow is Black Friday and that is the day that merchants look forward to because they are hoping that they will be turning a profit and that is fine with me. What is not fine are all those people who are forced by those who do not have regard for our holidays to work. They kept from those they want to be with- their friends and family. All in the so called name of profit!

Do we have to legislate the closing of businesses on the holidays? Is that what it will take or do we have to protest in front of those stores that are open when they should be closed? To do nothing will mean that our holidays are becoming meaningless without any of the values that our forefathers cherished.

So you have a choice to do something or do nothing. The choice is yours, but remember this- when something becomes marginalized so that it is just a shell of what it was, it will no longer be what it was. And then it will be because you failed to act!
