Keeping your beloved pet

Choosing between keeping your beloved pet and paying your bills is a very tough thing that no one should have to do. The pandemic has caused many people to be laid off temporarily or even permanently. If you have a dog or cat or some other pet and your financial situation has gotten worse due to the coronavirus pandemic, then the following information might be of interest to you or someone you know.

From the AP, “Many pet owners are finding themselves in financial straits during the pandemic. At the same time, there’s a growing recognition among animal welfare organizations that to help animals, they need to help struggling pet owners. “Increasing access to health care and critical resources for pets that are living in poverty is the best way to keep pets out of the shelter,” says Matt Bershadker, president and CEO of the ASPCA. “If we can provide those services, we can keep animals in a home where they’re bonded and loved.”

I myself find that I don’t have the monies needed to pay for medications for my own dog. The basic things like heart worm prevention medication, flea and tick prescriptions, shots to protect against the flu, etc.

So the following is where you, a pet owner/lover, can possibly find some help-

The Humane Society of the United States has many suggestions of where help might be found. Please do scroll down the whole page as there is a lot of pertinent information to learn about.

Your local state Animal Protection League also is a good source of information. The one for New Jersey is here.

I can not emphasize enough that you should also talk to your veterinarian, they might be able to arrange a payment plan that you could afford.

The times are hard for most of us and while some think that we should give up our pets. Both you and I know that would be more harmful than good for your pet(s) and yourself. I truly hope that in the near future things will get better, but until then please do avail yourself of the above information. Next to the love of your life nothing returns your love as much as your pet! And they do it without judging you.

People should never have to chose between keeping their pet or having to give it away.

That is my opinion- Jumpin Jersey Mike
