Smart phones are a wealth of information for the person who steals your cell phone/tablet and one way to prevent that information from being accessed is to use a Kill Switch (app), this renders your smart phone useless.  While right now some Apple iPhones have this feature available others are getting apps ready for Android and Windows systems.

Well, three wonderful members the New Jersey Legislator have proposed a bill (A3157) which wants to mandate that cell phone manufacturers put a Kill Switch on every phone they make and they also want this same feature on tablets.

The trio are Pat Dieganan, Tom Giblin and Joseph Cryan of the Assembly.  Why do they think that we need such a feature be mandated by law is a partial mystery to me, but you can read this article on why they want it. Their reasoning to make it mandatory is ridiculous to me!

Why do they want to legislate something that should be dictated by what the customer wants.  The marketplace is the best place to find out what the customer wants for most things.  Yes, it is true that some things have been mandated to the public’s benefit. But, in this case there might be better solutions available now or in the near future.  Such as data encryption apps. There are apps available for some phones and you can already lock with a PIN code.

So while I see a need for Kill Switch technology, it should not be mandated by either New Jersey or the Federal Government.  Here is a link to some information about how to protect your phone and just use any search engine to find even more tips.

Ah, you say the three I refer to are gentlemen of the legislator!  Well below is my tribute, you might say, to their over enthusiastic protection of the public.
