The wall

The Wall

The wall, the idea of building a wall at our southern border is holding hostage the government and its employees.

There is a history that most people do not know and I shall briefly talk about it.

During the Presidency of Bill Clinton he, “mandates construction on a 13-mile “Border Wall” along a line in the sand between San Diego and Tijuana. It is projected to cost $39 million and reduce border apprehensions from 100,000 per day to 5,000 per day for those 13 miles. Emigrants find other paths.

Then in 1996, “Clinton signs the Illegal Immigration Reform and Responsibility Act, increasing fines for illegal entry and approving funding for more patrols and fence construction. Emigrants shift away from the traditional crossings into privately held land, causing landowners to fence their property.

President Bush in 2006 “signs the Secure Fences act, promising 700 miles of fencing on the border, plus a virtual wall across the entire 2,000-mile border.” Then in 2007, “The Department of Homeland Security argues that it is impossible to construct the same type of fencing – i.e. a wall – across the border’s diverse terrain, and asks for and gets an amendment allowing a variety of barriers including “fencing, physical barriers, roads, lighting, cameras,” with another $12 billion in funding.”

In 2011, “The Department of Homeland Security completes 649 miles of barriers, including 350 miles of pedestrian fencing, at an estimated $6.5 million per mile, and 299 miles of vehicle barriers that cost approximately $1.7 million per mile. But $1 billion spent on a pilot program for “virtual surveillance” in Arizona yields only 53 miles of coverage. With the backing of the DHS, the Obama administration cuts funding for the rest of the hyper-expensive “virtual wall.”

So the above brief history shows that Clinton, a Democrat built the first new section of a border wall with Bush (the son) expanding it.

My problem is that while the wall will stop those coming from Mexico and the Americas, it will do nothing to stop other illegal immigration. The Democrats are hypocrites for saying that they now do not see a border wall as a necessity and yet back in the near past no one stopped its construction.

Why Trump thinks that by holding the government hostage by not agreeing to allow the funding of our government makes no sense to me. The wall is not something that will provide total security for us and the true solution is a mass immigration policy makeover.

Somehow the Democrats think that those who come here from down south will stay and want to become citizens that will vote Democratic. Well I have news for them, most just want to make money and then go back home. So the idea of a path to citizenship is just a big joke and a political noose in the long run.

We need reform that will allow people to come in to work and then leave when they are finished. Somehow too many politicians have gotten into their heads that everyone who comes here wants to become a citizen, when that is far from the truth.

Also there should be a way to make employers provide proof that those who work for them are here legally. By doing this those who have crossed our borders without permission will find that that can no longer work and thus will leave of their own accord.

Finally ICE should not be looked at as the villain, but as the tool that keeps us safe. Remember that our border must be secure to prevent terrorism.

That is my opinion- Jumpin Jersey Mike
