Now that the 2016 Iowa Caucus is history who really won and who should go home? The caucus results were extremely close between Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton, especially considering that Clinton has much more experience in running for president. One of the big results is that Sanders garnered over 80% of the college age vote and this is not insignificant at all. You have to remember that he is 74 years old and yet he connects with young people, I think that it shows how good a communicator of his ideas he is.
Of course I can not nor should I not ignore the Republicans results where Ted Cruz, Donald Trump and Marco Rubio fought each other for the title of most conservative evangelical. It seems that having a well run and very large team has helped Ted Cruz to come in first. Yet Donald Trump did very well because he did not have a large contingent of people working for him in Iowa. With a showing of 28 percent for Cruz, 24 percent for Trump and Rubio having 23 percent of the vote this race was again very close as was the Democratic one. Having only one percent separating Trump and Rubio just shows how very close this race will be in the other primaries.
Chris Christie did not fair well at all coming in next to last. While Christie has stated that he will continue on in New Hampshire it does not look good for him at all. Maybe he should take the hint that he can not win the Republican nomination and go home. He is actually more popular in New Jersey where he is Governor than in either Iowa or New Hampshire. Democrat Martin O’Malley and Republican Mike Huckabee have both packed up their campaigns and gone home.
The spending of large amounts of political contributions did not give Hillary Clinton the decisive win that she wanted and really needed to show that Bernie Sanders is not a threat to her winning the nomination. With just a tenth of a percentage point separating them as I am writing this shows that Sanders is a true challenger to Clinton. And if he keeps up with gaining momentum by picking up more support from college aged voters he could topple the Clinton campaign. Of course with the political problems that Clinton is having about her private email server, the overwhelming evidence that Wall Street is back her and if she stumbles in some other way her ambitions could be dashed by Sanders.
On the other hand Sanders positions on healthcare and the idea of free tuition for all could also topple Sanders in the long run. It seems to me that he has been slowly moving from the far left towards the political center, which I see as a good thing. But only time will tell who will be the Democratic and Republican candidates for President. So keeping your eye on that political bouncing ball!
